ALS in Ulm

Pioneering Work and Leadership

The ALS Center in Ulm is built on the pioneering work of Prof. Albert Ludolph, who founded Germany’s first ALS center in 1996 and retired in 2024. Since 2024, Prof. Jochen Weishaupt, Medical Director of the Department of Neurology at Ulm University Hospital and successor to Prof. Ludolph, has been leading the center’s work in ALS diagnosis, treatment, and research into the future.

An Internationally Recognized Center

Over the past three decades, Ulm has developed into a leading international center for the research and treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Patients from across Germany come to the Department of Neurology at Ulm University Hospital for diagnosis, second opinions, and interdisciplinary care. Key areas of expertise include respiratory care in ALS, the application of gene-specific therapies, the search for new ALS biomarkers, clinical therapeutic trials, and translational basic research.

Science and Collaboration

Since 2020, Ulm has been one of the sites of the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) and coordinates the German ALS network, which currently includes 25 sites. Close collaboration between clinical care, research, and partner institutions enables groundbreaking contributions—from the discovery of new genetic causes to the development of novel therapeutic approaches.

Research for the Future

The close integration of a specialized ALS outpatient clinic, research laboratories, a comprehensive patient registry, and a large biobank makes Ulm a key driver of ALS research. The overarching goal is to develop effective and sustainable treatment strategies to improve the long-term quality of life for people living with ALS.
