The University Hospital of Neurology in Ulm is currently conducting a placebo-controlled study on the efficacy of a high-calorie, high-fat dietary supplement (LIPCAL-ALS II). Twenty-six centers from the German ALS Network (MND-Net) are participating in the study.
This investigator-initiated trial (IIT)—that is, a study planned, funded, and conducted entirely within an academic setting—has already recruited 364 of the planned 392 participants. This is a remarkable success for ALS research and once again underscores the MND-Net’s ability to efficiently carry out large multicenter studies. We would like to express our sincere thanks to all MND-Net centers for their tremendous commitment. Recruitment is scheduled to be completed in August of this year, and the study is set to conclude in February 2028.
The goal of the study is to compensate for the increased energy requirements of ALS patients through a high-calorie diet, thereby slowing the progression of the disease. The previous study (LIPCAL-ALS I, completed in 2018) showed promising results: weight stabilization, a slowing of motor function loss, and a decrease in neurofilaments in the blood—all signs of potential efficacy. Additionally, survival was prolonged in patients with rapidly progressive disease. In the current study, the dosage is being increased to further enhance these effects.
As we enter the final stretch, we welcome anyone interested in participating. If you have any questions about participating in the study, please contact the principal investigator:
